On my workbench yesterday was a client’s laptop. They wanted it upgraded to Windows 11 and to have the personal files backed up to a USB drive. I connected the USB drive and backed files for two users of the laptop. Downloads, Desktop, Documents, Music and Videos were copied for each of the users.

When I started the Windows update It wouldn’t budge past 0% on the downloads.  Browsing to web sites didn’t go anywhere in Edge. Everything timed out.  I checked for a Proxy server and none was found.  The network adapter was reset and this didn’t help.  I was getting the correct IP address for the subnet and could ping the router.  It was baffling why I couldn’t access the internet and I was about to try another web browser.

Then I realized I was receiving messages on my smartphone from my internet provider application.  It said there was suspicious activity on the router and a new device was blocked.  It turns out my clients computer triggered this alert.  Once I allowed it on the smartphone app, the intertet began working as normal.  I don’t remember this happening in the past and I’ve had lots of other client computers on my network.
