Occasionally I will be at company and will see many computers in the building powered on and unattended ready to be accessed by anyone.  Or maybe just one or two computers will be present. It doesn’t matter because it just takes one for a security violation.  An unauthorized user could delete files, copy them to a USB drive, alter your financial program data.  Or get a look at your employee data.

I’m speaking about a unattended, Logged in, powered-on computer where anyone can walk up to it and start using it.  This is because there isn’t a password protector on it.  If you leave your computer, logout out of it or use the lock screen feature.  Another option is to shut it down.   All operating systems support this.

What I do on my computers is set a inactivity time-out with a password on it.  I usually use 10-15 minutes as the period.  When I get up from the computer and walk away, eventually a password will be needed to be entered to use it again.
