I was at a new client a few days ago with the goal of setting up a new Dell computer for them.  First the current computer was reviewed for local files, programs and internet favorites from their web browser.   The files were copied to a external USB drive so they could be moved to new one.  The programs were cloud-based and this made it easier than installing locally.  the new PC was connected along-side the current one so they could be compared if needed.

The project was going well until I tried to setup Windows 11 on the new PC.  I couldn’t get past the network setup procedure.  It saw the wireless hotspots nearby including my new client’s.  It was supposed to be working through the Ethernet cable and said “Connected, but no internet”.  I tried a different ethernet cable from the PC to the network switch and that didn’t fix it.  I started looking at the network switch and wondered how the current PC got on the internet. I looked at it’s network connection and it was WiFi! Not Ethernet like it should be.

The Ethernet cable between the Cable router/modem to the network switch was inspected.  It didn’t have any link connector LEDs lit or flashing which is a big issue!  It was determined that port three of the cable router/modem was dead and I moved the switch to another port.  Now it works and I continued with the new PC setup.  This went pretty well and my client is now enjoying their new computer.
